Handcarved Coffins is adapted from a short “true-crime” story by Truman Capote and produced as a collaboration between the Theater and Film/Video schools at California Institute of the Arts. Among literary circles, there is much debate on the legitimacy of Capote’s claim that the story was based in fact. As such, the film features two Truman Capotes: Puppet Capote, who is a character in Handcarved Coffins; and Master Capote, who is writing the story. Perry, the famous murderer from Capote’s masterpiece, In Cold Blood, is riding a thin line between lover and psychopath, toying with Master Capote, and eventually crossing over with Master Capote into the world of Handcarved Coffins.
