Children of Killers Costumes
Designed, Crafted, Patterned, and Sewn
For Children of Killers, a theatre production I costume designed, I was also largely in charge of creating the costumes, as is typical of low-budget theatre. For the remembered children, I decided on a blue ombré motif for each of them. If memory serves, there were nine young actors playing the children, so for each I sourced white cotton pieces I'd be able to dye. With the help of Emily Charlotte, we set up a dye station with a hotplate, a ladder, and a pulley.
To coordinate and contrast with the children's costume, I wanted the costume for one of the main characters who'd lost an arm during the violence in Rwanda to have a "pseudo"-ombré, namely blue stripes that became more and more spaced out until they "faded" to white. When I couldn't find the fabric I wanted, I decided to just make it happen, measuring out and then carefully striping white fabric. I then was able to cut my flat pattern from the fabric, being careful to match up the stripes at the shoulder. The top was self-faced to give it a clean finish.
In the final photo, you can see all of them together on stage.
