Produced at California Institute of the Arts in 2008, Hoppla, We’re Alive! is a German expressionist piece about revolution during the rise of the Nazi party. The scenic design, by Laura Mandat, placed the audience looking down into a construction pit. To contrast this, the costumes consisted of underwear and suits - with Karl being the only character whose costume matched the setting. Not strictly a period piece, this late 1920s Weimar romp featured the revolutionaries in contemporary clothing in the prologue then transitioning onstage. At the end of the play, the revolutionaries straddle the fence between contemporary and period.
